Why Cheltenham Roofs Grow More Moss
Moss spores are everywhere — but they only take hold where conditions favour them. Cheltenham has several factors working against its roofs:

The short answer is: yes, over time, but it’s rarely the emergency it’s sometimes made out to be. The real risks are:
Moisture retention

This accelerates the freeze-thaw cycle in winter — water penetrates small cracks in the tile or mortar, freezes overnight, expands, and widens the crack. Biocide spray treatment
A diluted biocide (typically potassium hydroxide or a quaternary ammonium compound) is applied to the roof surface. The moss dies over 4–8 weeks, dries out, and the remains blow or wash away. This is the least disruptive approach and avoids any risk of displacing tiles through physical scraping. It’s our standard first recommendation where the roof covering is otherwise sound.
Scraping and treatment
Where moss coverage is very heavy — particularly on north-facing slopes of Victorian terraces in St Paul’s — physical removal followed by biocide application gives a more immediate result. This should only be done from the ridge down with soft brushes; high-pressure washing loosens tile fixings and should never be used on clay or concrete tile roofs.
Long-life biocide treatment
After clearing, a longer-lasting biocide or inhibitor can be applied that suppresses regrowth for 3–5 years. Worth considering on particularly sheltered, north-facing slopes where regrowth is otherwise rapid.
